Rose Breeding for Beginners

Lesson One: Rose Flower Anatomy: This introductory lesson explores the diversity that can arise from crossing two rose parents as well as the anatomical terminology. Download here.

Lesson Two: Emasculation and Pollen Collection: This lesson covers which flower stage is ideal for pollination collection, the basics of emasculation, and how to collect and prepare pollen for use. Download here.

Lesson Three: Pollination: This lesson discusses when a flower is receptive to being pollinated and how to carry out pollinating a flower by hand. Download here.

Lesson Four: Processing Rose Seeds: This lesson describes what a mature rose hip looks like, as well as two methods to extract and prepare the rose seeds. Download here.

Lesson Five: Stratifying Rose Seeds: This lesson covers the stratification medium used for rose seeds and how to prepare seeds for stratification. Download here.

Lesson Six: Germination of Rose Seeds: This lesson discusses the proper medium for rose seed germination, the planting depth of seeds, and the time period required for germination. Download here.

Lesson Seven: Selection and Breeding Strategies for Roses: This lesson is the final installment of the Lesson Series in Rose Hybridization, and discusses the overarching themes of the lessons. It strives to inspire those following the lessons to continue exploring the topic. Download here.
